Trees for bees: Pollinators and species

Find out more about the species of trees that are being studied at Wakehurst.

English oak

The English oak supports more plant and animal interactions than any other native tree species.

In the spring, the oaks provide a fantastic pollen and nectar resource to early emerging pollinators, while the flowers and leaves of oaks make excellent food plants for our native purple hairstreak butterflies.

In the autumn, the fallen and rotting leaves on the ground support a wealth of fungi and invertebrates.
